In recent months, the UK has faced a significant ADHD medication crisis, leaving many individuals with ADHD struggling due to supply disruptions. The situation has been particularly alarming, with the NHS issuing a Patient Safety Alert on September 27, 2023, highlighting widespread shortages.
Current Supply Status
The NHS Patient Safety Alert indicated that the supply disruptions were expected to resolve between October and December 2023. However, the main ADHD medication provider, Takeda, anticipates ongoing supply issues until April 2024. These disruptions have led to interruptions in medication availability for a majority of individuals with ADHD.
Takeda's Statement
Takeda has acknowledged the intermittent nature of the supply issues, emphasizing that it doesn't imply a complete unavailability of stock until April 2024. The recommendation is for patients to stay in close contact with their pharmacies to access medication as soon as it becomes available. Takeda is actively notifying the Department of Health & Social Care of all stock shortages.
Survey Findings
A survey conducted from November 18 to November 27, 2023, reflects the severe impact on individuals with ADHD:
Medication Impact: 97% of respondents reported being affected by ADHD medication supply issues.
GP Interaction: Only 15% of individuals with an ADHD prescription were actively contacted by their GPs, exacerbating the situation for many.
Concerns and Impact: The crisis has raised concerns about job performance (68%), job loss (21%), academic performance (81%), and relationship strain (31%).
National Commission for Medication Supply Strategy:
Prioritize Access to Work Support: Accelerate Access to Work disability job support for those impacted by the ADHD medication crisis. Prioritize immediate needs by placing them in the priority queue, reducing the current 5-month wait.
Support Package and Strategy for Schools: Develop a comprehensive support package and strategy for schools dealing with the fallout of the ADHD medication crisis, providing necessary resources and assistance.
Guide Exam Boards and Ensure Budget Allocation: Commission the Department of Education to guide exam boards, ensuring clarity for January and summer exams. Allocate a dedicated budget for implementing necessary adjustments.
Enact a Supportive Strategy for Schools: Commission the Department of Education to formulate a concise support package tailored for schools, addressing unique challenges and supporting students effectively.
We hope the government swiftly implements these measures to address the pressing needs of those affected by the ADHD medication crisis.
